In 2021, the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) Board passed Inuvialuit Qitunrariit Inuuniarnikkun Maligaksat which translates to “Inuvialuit Family Way of Living Law”. As the first Inuit child and family wellness law, it intends to make sure Inuvialuit children, youth and families are supported wherever they live in Canada, regardless if they have involvement with child and family services or not. To undertake this task, Maligaksat was created to advocate for child wellbeing and to implement the Law while breaking systemic barriers and communicating change in the child welfare system.
Please join Zoila Castillo, training and quality assurance specialist for Maligaksat, as she explains how Maligaksat is committed to maintaining a family first, strengths-based approach by creating a system that is anti-oppressive, culturally appropriate, and client-centred. From community engagement with elders and families, to building programs that meet Inuvialuit needs, Maligaksat is a unique program that continues to build and grow across the country to provide continuous support for Inuvialuit.
